Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging

Telegraph Media Group (TMG) is committed to diversity, inclusion and belonging and offers a number of initiatives and policies designed to invest in talent, diversify the workforce and enhance staff’s careers and well-being.

Investing in diversity and development

TMG offers a number of opportunities for everyone to learn, develop and thrive at work to ensure that we are retaining talent, especially those from diverse backgrounds. We offer mentoring, training and development opportunities through The Academy and LinkedIn Learning.

Supporting future talent

Our Media Literacy Programme is investing in the future of journalism and is committed to helping young people confidently navigate the media landscape. We run the programme with The Careers Office with a focus on social mobility in order to promote entry-level opportunities at TMG to under-represented groups. Additionally, we run work experience, internships, apprenticeships and traineeships for people across the UK.

Promoting belonging through our employee networks

Our six inclusion networks: Women at TMG, Able (accessibility), Out Loud (LGBTQ+), Ethnic and Cultural Diversity, Well-being and Working Families; play an integral role in offering support to colleagues whilst fostering a greater sense of inclusion and belonging at TMG. Our employee networks run workshops and events to encourage a more open discussion around diversity in the workplace and promote positive action to improve representation of under-represented groups.

Closing the gender and ethnicity pay gap

Since 2018, we have published annual gender and ethnicity pay gap reports. We continue to invest in and support activity that reduces our gender and ethnicity pay gap whilst holding ourselves accountable and sharing progress on a regular basis. Additionally, we use monitoring processes to look at pay progression and bonuses to ensure they are consistent, fair and transparent.

Offering progressive policies

We continue to promote greater diversity through our workplace policies and last year we launched new progressive policies on: Transgender & Non-binary; Menopause; Reasonable Adjustments and Domestic Violence and Abuse. We were one of the first companies in the UK to offer staff Equal Parental Pay. TMG offers both new mothers and fathers 26 weeks full pay for parental leave.

Highlighting opportunities at TMG

We have been working with a range of specialist recruitment organisations which support talent attraction by proactively promoting opportunities at TMG. We run inclusive hiring practices across all of our recruitment by working with partners to widen our search, ensuring that we have inclusive language on all of our job descriptions and monitoring our data to ensure we have diverse applicant shortlists for roles at all levels across TMG as a whole. By strengthening our talent pipeline, we aim to see increased representation of women and ethnic minorities in senior positions and long-term progress in increasing our gender and ethnicity balance across all levels of the company.
